The success rate is defined as the percentage of reported designs in each study that adopt the designed structure (folded, blue; experimental structure determined, orange) or function (green, red).

By continuing to design protein building blocks that are more sensitive to stimuli such as pH, light, ionic strength, and temperature, we will expand the functionality of designed materials in the future. We still do not have the theoretical or computational tools to design any protein structure or any protein-protein interaction interface on demand. Wild-type fluorescent proteins are often oligomers, a property that could interfere with the natural activity of a protein of interest. A common design strategy to prevent oligomerization is to introduce unfavorable electrostatic interactions to disrupt the subunit interfaces.

In particular, AbDesign breaks proteins from a structure family into a few modular segments based on structural alignments and then recombines these segments into new backbones. AbDesign is able to build large numbers of similar structures even for moderately sized families of homologs. An elegant example of a protein design approach to delineate protein function in vivo is seen in the work of Shokat et al.73 By designing a protein kinase with altered ATP-binding specificity they were able to identify substrates of that kinase. The strategy was to first introduce mutations in the kinase that enlarged the substrate-binding pocket such that bulky ATP derivatives could be bound. The binding pocket on the wild-type kinase is too small to bind the bulky ATP derivative.

It’ll be a bit of a reunion project, as the show was created, written, and executive-produced by Veep executive producers Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck. Mandel, Harrelson, and Theroux are also onboard to executive-produce.

The principals in this particular telling of the story are E. They were called the Plumbers because, well, plumbers locate and stop leaks.

Severance actor Yul Vazquez plays Bernard Barker, a Cuban-born operative who worked for the FBI and CIA before being recruited into the White House Plumbers by Hunt. He was one of the five burglars paid by the CRP to break into the DNC offices—he served one year in prison for the crime. Gordon LiddyJustin takes on the role of former FBI agent G. Gordon Liddy who was tasked with preventing leaks of classified information to the media.

Lesser known perhaps is the other duo at the heart of this scandal, a pair of operatives named E. Gordon Liddy, who also had a hand in toppling the Nixon presidency—except they had been scheming to do the exact opposite. Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux lead an ensemble cast as Hunt and Liddy. Given all the projects being flushed down the drain at HBO these days, it’s no surprise that some plumbers have been hired. "White House Plumbers" is better before it gets to Watergate, with the first half depicting how Liddy and Hunt were bombastic but somehow good at their jobs, which helped them lead Nixon's corrupt Committee for the Re-election of the President. (The title comes from how they were known for "fixing leaks.") The series slightly elevates its comedy here. Harrelson and Theroux ham up liberally recounted events that have some shred of truth, and flourish in a passage about investigating the therapist of Daniel Ellsberg (who famously released the Pentagon Papers). We watch Liddy and Hunt, in bafflingly fake wigs, do dumb things like pose in front of the camera used during a break-in (only made worse when Hunt doesn’t take the film out before it reaches the authorities later on). It’s Coen brothers-lite with the bittersweetness of history and a looming sense of how ill-conceived each move is. Their patriotism isn’t just inflating their hubris; it will get them in serious trouble.

The new HBO limited series is based on the hard to believe true events that ultimately led to Richard Nixon's resignation, specifically the blundering team of spies and burglars known as the Plumbers. As Huyck says, “All the President’s Men” is “the ne plus ultra” of Watergate entertainment. But it’s more of a journalism thriller than a study of political scandal. Oliver Stone’s “Nixon” dips into Watergate, but within the larger context of the president operating behind the scenes. With each episode directed by David Mandel (also a “Veep” alum, along with Gregory and Huyck), "White House Plumbers" initially gets considerable momentum from the weirdness of its two lead performances.

Liddy is a bit of an eccentric, with Politico calling him "Watergate's most colorful character," which is not an empty distinction. In the series, he is an ardent defender of President Nixon, believing that leaks like the Pentagon Papers are helping to destroy the nation that he worked to defend. The producers of Succession and Veep are turning a satirical lens onto these individuals and their co-conspirators in a new HBO miniseries, White House Plumbers. The show's title refers to the actual name of this group, a covert unit formed during the Nixon administration to plug leaks of classified information (namely, the Pentagon Papers) to the press. The plumbers would eventually be responsible for the illegal activities—breaking into and bugging the Democratic National Committee headquarters—that would blow up into Watergate and force Nixon's resignation.

They were, in a sense, the straight men in their own comedy. Frank Sturgis was a police officer, private investigator, Marine and anti-communist recruited by Howard Hunt to assist with the Watergate break-in.

Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), the real-life blinkered zealots who, er, masterminded the break-in and took the brunt of the fall when everything went south. It’s a combination buddy comedy/buddy tragedy about a pair of true believers who keep charging ahead through blind loyalty and a desperate need to grind axes, even as the walls close in. We’ve seen the Watergate story through the eyes of the reporters who broke it (1976’s “All the President’s Men”). We’ve seen it through the eyes of White House counsel John Dean (the 1979 miniseries “Blind Ambition”). We’ve even seen it through the eyes of two teenage girls (the underappreciated 1999 comedy “Dick”).

The ultimate political scandal has been an ever-flowing fount of pop culture practically since the moment resigned president Richard Nixon flashed double peace signs and boarded his helicopter out of Washington. The dialogue is rich throughout White House Plumbers, and so are the performances and characters. Harrelson is wonderful — exploding like Ralph Kramden one minute, simmering like Macbeth the next — and the supporting cast is a very deep bench, serving up unexpected treasures every episode. And Lena Headey from Game of Thrones as Hunt's wife, Dorothy! And Gary Cole as FBI executive Mark Felt – who, though he's not identified as such here, in real life was the infamous Deep Throat of All the President's Men.

Gordon Liddy, masterminded the burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at Watergate. When they were arrested, a vast network of cover-ups and payoffs from Nixon's top brass followed in order to buy their silence—which obviously backfired. Cohen fulfilled numerous commissions before opening the bookstore and gallery Ex Libris with her second husband, Arthur Cohen. Accomplished weaver Dorothy Wright Liebes (American, 1897–1972) is often credited as a vital part of the California Modernist movement, and was once one of the most well-known designers in the United States. Liebes was a sharp businesswoman who believed mass-produced textiles could reach wider audiences while retaining a handwoven appearance. Explore women in design below through individual designers, design disciplines, and Cooper Hewitt’s past exhibitions. In the dynamic and interactive Process Lab, you can brainstorm design solutions through hands-on and digital activities.

She began designing book covers in the late 1880s and quickly became one of the most sought-after artists in the field. National Design Awards trophies are created by The Corning Museum of Glass. 2023 National Design Award winners—Seymour Chwast, Design Visionary; Arem Duplessis, Communication Design; and Beatriz Lozano, Emerging Designer—in a conversation about how changes in communication design have shaped their work, as well as where they see the future of the field. They oversaw the revitalization of the original structure and the seamless integration of modern building systems, making sure the entire building is safe, efficient and accessible. Publications

It is the mission of Cooper-Hewitt’s staff and board of trustees to advance the public understanding of design across the 240 years of human creativity represented by the museum’s collection. In a Georgian mansion on New York’s Upper East Side, a lamp made of shattered ceramic crockery abstracted into a frozen explosion hangs over an gilded porcelain jewel cabinet, artfully adorned with images of birds and flowers and ancient gods. In the next room, an iPod shares space with a typewriter, and a Russian lithograph in a custom case designed by one of New York’s top architecture firms. Aliki van der Kruijs (Dutch, born 1984) has a studio in The Hague, the Netherlands and works on self-initiated projects, collaborations, and commissions that juxtapose her interdisciplinary background in applied art. Interested in the relationship between humans and nature, she has invented a special technique to record the falling of raindrops on textiles and porcelain. Winner of the 2023 National Design Award for Landscape Architecture, Kongjian Yu is a globally recognized landscape designer, founder of Turenscape, and a founder of Peking University College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. In this talk, Yu discusses his work and how his landscape architecture methods and ideas can help mitigate climate events such as flash floods, superstorms, and tidal surges.

The Parsons School of Design, in partnership with Cooper Hewitt, offers an accredited Master’s Program in the History of Design and Curatorial Studies located on the museum campus. The program prepares the next generation of design curators, conservators, scholars, educators, and administrators; all of whom receive hands-on experience with masterworks of design and are fully integrated into the museum’s departments. Shaping the National Design Collection, we invite Cooper Hewitt members to join us for an evening with award-winning designers and weavers Helena Hernmarck and Elizabeth Whelan. In conversation with Acting Director of Curatorial, Matilda McQuaid, Hernmarck and Whelan will discuss the innovations and inspirations which define their practices. After the death of her husband Alvin Lustig, Elaine Lustig Cohen (American, 1927–2016) took the reins of his graphic design business. Retaining his clients, she quickly learned how to run the business and became a successful graphic designer herself.

"Rather than just having two design teams, we wanted to have a sampling of American design firms represented here," says the museum’s director Caroline Baumann. Gluckman Mayner Architects’ primary role was to design the new spaces—the modern white galleries brought alive by the exhibitions, the cafe, the classroom and lab spaces—and plan new circulation, including the naturally lit public stairwell that links the four floors of galleries. Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners have been involved since the Cooper Hewitt started planning this renovation in 2006.

Establishing a studio in Los Angeles, California, in 1976, she became the leading figure of the emergent “NEW WAVE” design movement. Greiman’s transmedia approach to design juxtaposes typography, photography, and other elements. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Althea McNish (British, 1924–2020) moved to London and studied textile design at the Royal College of Arts. Known for her unprecedented combinations of patterns and colors, McNish helped introduce the Caribbean aesthetic to an international audience. A prominent artist of the Arts and Crafts movement, Alice Cordelia Morse (American, 1863–1961) started her career as a glass painter for the firm of Louis C. Tiffany before returning to The Cooper Union for postgraduate training in art and design.

American textile designer, weaver, and color authority Dorothy Liebes (1897–1972) had a profound influence across design fields, helping to shape American tastes in areas from interiors and transportation to industrial design, fashion, and film. The “Liebes Look”—which combined vivid color, lush texture, and often a glint of metallic—became inextricably linked with the American modern aesthetic.
